Zooey Deschanel’s self-respect strikes again!
For those of you who don’t know, here’s the backstory:
Earlier this month, the LA Times published an opinion piece by Patt Morrison dedicated to slamming our girl in favor of what Morrison must have felt was righteous indignation. The opening line reads: “I can’t believe Zooey Deschanel is really the snobby cow she came off sounding like Saturday evening.”
Other pieces of “quality journalism” the columnist dared to circulate within the piece include:
- “Excuse me? Downtown, the worst of L.A.? What, Ms. Deschanel, you don’t have any homeless people there near your home? Or does that not count, because they’re on the beach, not sidewalks?”
- “Ms. Deschanel’s remarks are all the more gob-smacking because the success of her 2009 film ‘(500) Days of Summer’ is chiefly thanks to…downtown L.A.”
- “Did Ms. Deschanel not look any farther than her trailer door?”
Um, excuse us? You bet your bottom dollar Zooey wrote back!
In an open letter posted on her website hellogiggles.com, Zooey addressed Patt with honesty and grace. And she stated the facts – like, oh, say, that Patt wasn’t even at the BAFTA dinner where Zooey supposedly made these comments! Here are some highlights from her letter:
- “I am completely and utterly shocked that a professional journalist, whom I have never met, would take a partial quote out of context and use it as a basis for a misguided personal attack. Further, I find it appalling that you would resort to name-calling to get your point across.”
- “I NEVER said Downtown LA was ‘the worst of LA.’ I did make a reference to a parking lot adjacent to the theater that had a lot of trash in it in an attempt to be humorous.”
- “I don’t think I need to defend my love of Los Angeles. I am a native Angelino, and had you done any research at all, you would have found that I have been quoted in the press on numerous occasions talking about how much I love Downtown.”
Patt, however, was unmoved. The only edit she made to the original piece was the correction that Zooey does not, in fact, live on the Westside as Patt claimed. But it doesn’t matter: Zooey stood up for herself as every classy woman should.
Here is Zooey at the drama-free Disneyland premiere of Winnie The Pooh (2011).

Her flower dress is as lovely as her new track featured on the movies soundtrack. The song, So Long, is a musical collaboration with She & Him partner M. Ward. Although we love her fresh, girly playfulness, this ensemble feels a little incomplete without something around her neck. How about this pink lightweight pashmina?
